impudentsongbird: (but from him)

Gabe had no issues with letting Skul lead the debate, seeing as he knew the context that much better, to say nothing of his being an actual detective regardless of what they'd told Guild. "You'd know better than me," the Archangel just said with a shrug. "But if he's gettin' back at the Sanctuary, it's gotta be something in connection."

He gave Ms Sorrows a short nod in farewell and turned to follow Skulduggery out the door, glad--despite suspecting he was being rude--to be able to leave. At least, that was the intent.

Gabriel had changed a lot in less than a year, even discounting his time at Landel's. He had learned that angels' lives weren't quite as secure as he'd once thought. He'd learned that even angels had to adapt to changing circumstances.

That didn't mean he'd yet grown to be exceptionally good at it. China's words made him whip around with horror and consternation, shock written all over his face. Skulduggery had said the woman was good, not that she was psychic! And even if she was, there was no way she could read an angel's mind without them knowing! How had she done that? How had she found out so easily, so quickly, in a world where sorcerers had no faith?

What was he meant to do? Even in his own world, this was unheard of. Michael had handled it well when Swami had gone to him, but that was Michael--impossible to fluster. Gabe wasn't nearly so able to keep cool in the face of surprises.

"I--didn't take you for a believin' lady," he stammered, finally finding his voice and looking desperately at Skulduggery. It wasn't panic in his eyes, not exactly, but something approaching it. What was he meant to do? Even now, it didn't occur to him to try and read China's mind more directly, even though he could have certainly discovered how she'd found out what she knew if he had. He was too blindsided to do anything but fall back on what he knew best: wait for a command.
