It wasn't really a surprise that Skul would leave off that subject so soon. Gabriel opened his mouth to answer the next when the detective's words actually hit him properly. Merlin isn't an angel.

Gabe paled. Merlin wasn't an angel. "Oh no," he whispered with quiet horror. "Oh, no, Rafe, what have you done?" Because Skul was right, and the Archangel looked at him now, fingers gripping the edge of the sheets as if just shy of wringing it. "Merlin's a nephilim, but he's still bound by the metaphysical limitations of any human. He won't have survived coming through the doorway I made. They must have made one on Earth."

Which meant that Lucifer might find it. Maybe already had found it. Which meant all of this was entirely possible, not because Gabriel had left home to save Skulduggery--but because Raphael and Merlin had left home to save him.
