Absently Gabriel nodded as he smoothed out the brim, handing the hat back to Skulduggery. "I need an anchor," he said simply, retrieving his chalk and turning to begin a second spiral of wards to complement the first. "Something whose tune I can sing to guide me. To get here, I used the rosary."

A rosary he knew very well, and knew wouldn't have been changed by the crossing. He'd known Skul wasn't precisely human, but he hadn't known him as anything but; such a massive change wasn't something the Archangel could have just left out. So he hadn't dared to use Skul himself.

"I don't know any items from your world well enough to do the same, unfortunately," the Archangel said. "But if you tell me enough about one person, their names and who they are and what they mean to you, I ought to be able to use their connection to you as a compass." He paused and glanced over his shoulder. "The place between realities isn't calm, Skul," he said quietly. "It's a maelstrom of sound, a cacophony of music all playing at once. I can wade through it, but I need something to guide me."

He paused a moment, and then added, "And a place to breach the walls of this reality. I may be able to do it without finding a weak spot, but it would be much easier, and less tiring, if I have a place where the curtains have been lifted before."
