"It's just too bad the cabbie would also notice," Gabriel said wryly, and then grinned. "I have to admit, though, I'm curious about this disguise. I've never seen it before. And it'll make me look normal." He really should have thought of dressing better for the weather. Usually the Archangel spent so long invisible that it didn't matter what he wore.
"I don't think I should strain myself, though," he said with utmost innocence, his brown eyes wide and earnest. "I mean, I need to rest and all. And the physical strain is the one thing we haven't managed to properly address yet. I really shouldn't exacerbate it, so I think we should take the cab."
Then he winked at Fletcher and laughed, knowing perfectly well that Skulduggery did not like cabs.

The older man only waited patiently, matching Ghastly mouthful for mouthful, staring at the shelved alcohol behind the counter and idly humming '99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall'.
He set his glass down gently, watching Ghastly with a thoughtful expression. "Broken rope, eh?" he said. "He still doin' it behind your back? He still hurtin' people just for the Hell of it? When it came out, he lie to you or make excuses? Try to avoid responsibility? Try to pretend it was all okay?"
Dad shrugged. "Ain't gonna pretend it's easy. Never is, to know someone's gone wrong and you couldn't stop it." He surveyed Ghastly from under his brow. "But the question I'd be askin' ain't why you didn't mean enough to him for him to trust you with what he did. What I'd be askin' is whether he means enough to you to go help keep savin' him. 'Cos he wouldn't have stuck by you unless you were important enough for him to stop with this 'addictive thing'. Cold turkey, eh?"
Wordlessly he hummed '99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall', swaying to the music in his seat and draining the rest of this glass.
