"As you please, Skul." Just inside the alley, Gabriel paused a moment to wait for Fletcher and then put his arm through the teen's, gently appropriating him as a leaning-post. "Since Skulduggery's decided to go and sulk, we'll just have to take command for a little while," he said to the Teleporter, voice teasing and deliberately raised so the detective would hear it.

Gabe grinned conspiratorially as he started down the sidewalk to the road, where there were, fortunately, cabs at regular intervals. He whispered, "Besides, his being back there gives us a chance to plan."

Luckily for Ghastly, Dad seemed perfectly willing to keep talking until the tailor had acclimatised to the 'whatever' it was that had given him so much pause. As if he was just an ordinary old man. As if he didn't know anything about what might be going through Ghastly's head.

"'Course, sounds like you've been through a wringer," Dad said thoughtfully. "Things happen. Some things worse than others. S'why it's always best to go out and do somethin' once in a while. Somethin' not related. Arcade games are great for that, so long as y'don't go out intendin' to always win. I like the ones with random chance."

The last was added as if in afterthought. "Can't go wrong with randomness. Or cards. Hundreds of things you can do with cards. Just a pity there aren't many arcade games like that, but ah well." He shrugged. "It happens. Maybe we can find a pack and a table and play for candyfloss." A gleam lit his eyes. "Or hustle some of the vendors. Fair trade, seein' as they're gonna be hustlin' us right back."
