"Nope and nope," Gabriel sang out, grinning. "Think a repeat might actually be cheatin'. And no," he added, "it's not Gaelic. Before you ask." Who, exactly, was going to ask he didn't specify; it seemed to be just a general remark.

His grin was genuine, but a little softened. Barney Lachlan's soul was bright and honest, loving, dedicated. A single father caring for a sick daughter. No wonder he didn't work nights. She had been sick for such a long time. Gabriel made a note to drag Skul and Fletcher, and maybe the others, to the carnival on Barney's day off. Maybe they'd see them there. That would be nice.

"Sure, why not?" God said with an easy shrug. "It's the easiest. We can do somethin' more complicated later on. Like havin' a set of goals and who hits 'em, or whatever else we come up with."

They reached the arcade game, where a long line-up had just finished dwindling, thus allowing the pair to play almost at once. The proprietor was quite willing to supply double the balls at The Creator's request, and God turned to Ghastly with a grin, handing over the tailor's set of pingpong balls. "Who gets the most, then, lad? Easy stakes first?"
