By the time Skulduggery spoke again, Gabriel was halfway through the sixth spiral and the sigils on the first were beginning to resonate. Just faintly--very faintly--but enough for Gabriel to know the Faceless Ones had gotten through his cliff-side ward. He kept an eye on them as he wrote, and when Skul spoke, he paused and turned enough to meet the detective's gaze.
"Yes," he said gently, understanding in his eyes. "Yes, I can." He hesitated for a moment and then added, "The alternative--it's not impossible, I think. They would both require some time, is all. The other way--I would need to sing your whole life and reach a certain point of power, and I'd need to do it where the portal was."
They would be in danger. They would have to hold off the Faceless Ones for as long as they were there. But Gabe didn't know where the portal was; maybe it was somewhere they could go to and ward, and then he would have the time. "If that area is securable, it might be the better way."
If. And Gabriel didn't know. But Skul did, so it was his choice.
