Well, that didn't work. If anything it focussed Sanguine's soul to the point of Valkyrie, which wasn't helpful in discovering what was happening now. And even though the sorcerer was right in assuming there was a reason for Valkyrie being elsewhere, Gabriel found that assumption irritating.

He threw a pitying look over his shoulder. "Val's got her own contacts, Billy-Ray. She follows 'em. If you think I'm gonna tell you who they are, that hole in your gut's doin' a lot more than sapping your stamina."

True, it was highly unlikely that Valkyrie was looking Caelan up now. Or maybe she was. Or maybe she was investigating Lord Vile. It didn't matter; it wasn't a lie. She did have her own contacts, and she was entirely capable of following the leads they brought. "Besides," he added as he turned back and sketched another quick mark on the wall, "what makes you think Skul ain't the lost puppy here?"

It wasn't entirely unexpected that Father O'Reilly would focus on that, but although Solomon's lips quirked faintly, there wasn't really any amusement in his expression when he nodded. Somehow, it made it easier to keep himself stable when O'Reilly wasn't. He wasn't sure why. Perhaps the phrase 'misery loves company' did have its merits.

"No one's quite sure how it happened," he said. "Most of us assume it was because of the person who used it--Nefarian Serpine. He was an Adept, but not a Necromancer. By rights he shouldn't have been able to master the magic at all, but he did." Then he shrugged. "Then again, it worked quite well on everyone else. Skulduggery Pleasant--" here he couldn't help the bitterness in his voice-- "Skulduggery Pleasant seems to be an exception to most rules."

Just what was it about the man that had made Saint Gabriel rescue him? Solomon was under no illusions about the skeleton's own crimes, even though he obviously didn't know them all. Pleasant was under no illusions about his own crimes. He had been a general in a war.
