impudentsongbird: (since the very start)

Anton knew where that was. It was nowhere near Serpine's castle, at least. Or anywhere else, for that matter. And it had been underground. 'Hold down the fort', indeed; people would have to find it, first.

The sorcerer turned, now, to watch Renn hurry across the room to the barrels and then back again.

"Please," Gabe said with a slow nod, and rolled over to push himself upright. His arms shook slightly, Anton noticed. It wasn't exhaustion; exhaustion wouldn't put those sort of lines around the man's eyes. It was pain, pure and simple. The man didn't look injured, but maybe he had some muscle problems or extensive bruising. That would explain why he was finding it so difficult to move. Perhaps a headache as well, given how he'd put his face in the pillow.

Renn assisted him and Anton turned away just slightly, still able to see them out of the corner of his eye. There was a crinkle in his brow. Granted, the only reason they had known where Scarab was hiding was thanks to Gabe, even though Anton didn't understand how. Obviously, the man had some kind of magic which was useful, and so it made logical sense to take care of him. One always made sure one's team-mates were in as best condition as they could be, when the future was uncertain.

And yet there was something in the pause, in Skulduggery's tone, which suggested something else. A ... concern. A concern which seemed somewhat unlike Skulduggery given Gabe had proven he could take care of himself perfectly well--this in spite of his injuries. In a way, it was also because of them. Gabe had come out alive and in relative capability after being held by some of the most evil men still known to the Irish Sanctuary. And especially since there had been no sign of the Remnant. Anton was still puzzling over that part.

"He's had some water," he said, "but very well. I'll have Professor Grouse look at him when he wakes up, if he's able. What will you do now?"
