impudentsongbird: (even in the darkness)

"With luck, there won't be many people around to have to worry about," Corrival said without breaking stride or even looking behind. As if it was rehearsed, Anton had taken the position just behind him, where Erskine usually walked--covering their general from behind while he led. Ghastly had fallen in the middle, where he could cover the less experienced members of the group.

Someone had to take last. It just wasn't usually Skulduggery.

"But in the event there are, yes we can." Corrival fished in his pocket for a wallet. His outside wallet, not the wallet on the inside pocket, which was where he put it. The one he left on the outside, for anyone who might be curious about obtaining it, was entirely fake. That didn't mean some of those things weren't useful. He flipped it open over his shoulder to reveal the ID inside. The ID which said, incidentally, that Corrival was an Inspector.

"The only problem will be if he uses magic. I don't think he will. He's willing to out us to the general public, but only if it helps his cause. If it doesn't, he won't bother. I'm surprised someone hasn't already explained this to you."

At the last, Corrival didn't raise his voice; he was already projecting his voice so they could all hear him, in that way of someone trained and conditioned to do so. But the words were pointed. He pulled the wallet back. "Sometimes investigations cross over. It's only logical to have a means to step on the mortal world's toes. God knows some people don't even need an excuse."

Once more, Corrival's last words were pointed.
