Something rang untrue, and Gabriel frowned. "That seems a little odd, doesn't it? I mean, if they're not allowed to have a phone call, let alone to request their own escorts."
With good reason, really. Asking for personal escorts was asking for trouble. Maybe the difference here was that Guild had once been respected and turned himself in, and was't considered a flight-risk. And yet ... and yet. There was something off about it. Maybe it was just Davina Marr's name, but Gabriel couldn't help but wonder what the woman's place would be after all this, now that Skulduggery had been reinstated.
Or maybe Guild really did just want to tell them something. Gabriel decided he couldn't know, yet, and tried to let it go. For now.
They passed through the corridors into the prison, Gabe bestowing smiles on anyone they passed--half genuinely and half to distract them from the way their gazes stopped on his hand on Skul's arm. The detective had enough to think about without people starting to overtly wonder. Either way, it did work. Some people looked startled, some looked curious, but most smiled back.
It didn't take long to sign Guild out. Gabriel chose to remain by the entrance, leaning against the jamb and carefully parsing the resonance of magic-inhibiting wards and the many dark souls they contained so the ripples cascaded around him in ways that wouldn't exacerbate his head.
