It didn't just stop Erskine in his tracks. Gabriel went red and choked slightly on words that didn't quite want to come out. It was Erskine's sudden concern over using his Lord's name that finally enabled the Archangel to break the cycle with a sudden laugh.

"Only if you don't want Him to overhear you. Skulduggery had a bit of trouble with that too, but really, if you call His name, why wouldn't He look to see who's calling and why?" Gabe grinned at Skulduggery, but really, it was only logical. When Gabe's name was called, he fielded the prayers, even when he couldn't or shouldn't answer them. Which he had done for a number of them, the ones he could and were most urgent, in the couple of days before Marr attacked the Sanctuary.

His Master certainly didn't leave prayers lapse. He listened. It was just that most people had stopped thinking of His name as a calling-card.

Gabriel sobered a moment later. "I'll have to decline that request, though. Me and Rafe, and Merlin too. This isn't our world. Your world has to be defined by you, not by us. I realise the the Observer Effect is in play here and the line's hard to draw, but deciding your government is something we really shouldn't be involved in. And we're not," he added finally onto the end of the last, changing subjects on a dime. His cheeks reddened a little further before he lifted his chin and gave Skul a dazzling smile. "Skulduggery, you're very pretty, but I'm just not interested in you that way."
