The conversation had, by then, devolved into accusations at Rafe for being late about raising Lazarus because the man--or rather soul--had been beating the wings off him at dice and Rafe just wanted to win back some of his favours before Lazarus returned to life, and responding accusations at Gabe for spoiling Mary and Elizabeth silly by taking them out shopping at bazaars until everyone came to their senses and stopped talking about stoning her.
Rafe grumbled that he was pretty sure Lazarus had been cheating, even though he hadn't quite had the imagination to figure out how at the time. Gabe claimed in his defence that it was better Mary was out shopping with a close female cousin who believed her instead of sitting around at home having her fate decided by self-righteous idiots who didn't believe women could have a sex-drive before marriage.
Rafe then demanded to know if that's what they were doing in Cairo in the 1960s when there had been that mass sighting of Mary. Gabe declined to comment, and asked how many favours he'd won back yet seeing as he'd now had nearly two thousand years to make up for lost time.
Merlin glanced over at the pair of arguing angels, amused and exasperated in equal turns. "I'd say that he's wise enough not to go that far, but given what example he'd been about to give before Gabe interrupted, I'm not so sure anymore. Consider it done."
He let Skulduggery take Solomon and then, with a quick glance around, reached out to yank on something in midair. Rafe cut off in the middle of his sentence with a yelp, a small gust of wind making his clothes billow. "Ow. Whatchoo pullin' my feathers for, Pops? That hurt."
"I considered using something to knock off your halo," Merlin said, "but I wasn't sure if you'd notice. Give Barney a hand with Allie, won't you? I'll be driving. I imagine--" This last was said with twinkling eyes at Barney. "--that you've had enough chauffeurring others around, so for once, if you'll allow me, I shall do the same to you."
