"Well, there weren't any bad guys to chase," Gabe said, grinning at Skulduggery. "So we had to improvise. Did you know you're kind of adorable when you're blushing, Skul?"
Because he was. Because that, really, was the sole reason Gabe was willing to tease him so openly--that and the sheer child-like glee in Valkyrie's soul. She didn't have enough opportunities to be gleeful, to take pleasure in something like this. If all it took was Skulduggery being a little embarrassed, Gabe didn't mind shouldering his vengeance.
Of course, Valkyrie's question took greater precedence than that--for the moment, at least. Gabe turned toward her, taking a moment to remember what she'd said about using a reflection to stand in for her at her house. He hadn't been enthused about that either, but reflections weren't really inherently evil. Usually. When they were following the constraints by which they were made.
"They can be useful," he agreed, "and they're not inherently bad, but they can be misused. There are a lot of ways they can go wrong, and when they do, they go wrong rather spectacularly. Moreover, the longer they're used, the more likely they are to go wrong. How long have you been using yours, and how frequently?"
Because there was a difference. If Valkyrie had been using hers for several years, but infrequently, then it would be unwise, but mostly harmless. She could probably continue using it for years in the same fashion without any trouble, even up to her leaving her parents' house. If she'd been using it for years, and every day, or nearly ... well, Gabe would be very surprised if there wasn't something wrong with it already.
