"It's ..." Gabe paused for a moment to find the right words. It was always difficult, explaining a metaphysical happening in terms of pure language when it was all so sensory. Even more than how Solomon witnessed things--his mind only translated them into a means he could comprehend. It wasn't actually like that; it was just sensory enough to leave impressions of things with which Solomon was familiar.

"It's like a web," he said at last, "more than a leash. It involves creating a connection between a group of people, with Skulduggery at its centre, and using the threads of the web to ease the burden on him. The nature of the rope that creates the thread is how you feel toward him--your love for him. That's the part that will make it unbreakable, regardless of distance or state."

Erskine's wistful, accepting thought had given him an idea, though. Gabe didn't know much about Descry Hopeless except what he'd gleaned from nuances in the surviving Dead Mens' souls, but if the seven of them were involved in the web together--eight including Corrival--it would provide the basis of a web even stronger than Gabe had initial visualised. Seven points to a web. Seven was an exceedingly powerful number. These were men who'd known each other as well as embodied souls possibly could.

These were men whose souls were so closely bound it didn't matter that two of them were dead.

"You'd feel some vestige of what Skul was feeling," Gabe went on apologetically. "Not to the extent he does now, and it would be worse if he was under duress, but the point of it is to disperse his burden around in a manner that makes it easy to carry for any single individual in the link."
