"I'd love to." Gabe grinned. "I don't scare that easy, luckily for you. Or unluckily? I'll let you decide."
Janet already had some hours plotted out, and they were for the afternoon. That was good; it gave Gabe better coverage of the day compared to today. And, he saw further on in the week, he had some at night as well. That was one of the most critical times, Janet explained. Things happened at night. Gabe suspected those might be Marr's chosen time of movement too.
Within a few minutes they had a working timetable. Gabe thanked Janet warmly and waved goodbye to the other girls in the lounge as he went to the door. Kelly waved back; so did one of the women Gabe had met on his tour.
Gabe waited until he was outside before he exhaled slowly, glancing around for traffic before crossing the road briskly. He walked into the alley with his head held high, a woman unafraid of the closeness of the walls. He just wanted to get someplace he couldn't be seen; he only needed a moment. The moment he had it he slid easily from one skin to another, choosing to keep the sneakers and the jeans but changing back into his T-shirt. It was still blue, but in a fit of mischief he drew on it a picture of a skeleton dressed as 1950s private-eye, complete with coat, hat and cane.
He ambled easily down the street to the next block and into the ice-cream parlour. "It's a good thing I'm here, then, isn't it?" he teased, overhearing Fletcher's comment, and then tilted his head. "Skul, did you know you're blushing? I'm going to get some ice-cream. Want me to get you some more?"
