For a very long moment which stretched into very long minutes Saffron didn't know what to say. So she said nothing. Instead she merely stood there, within this Christian priest's grasp, his words whirling around in her head.
"The beauty of it is that there are no pre-set plans. Just chances. Opportunities. You either take advantage of them or you don't."
Even the Temple said you should take advantage of opportunities when they came. Saffron had never quite known what they looked like. She'd never been offered them before, or at least not that she could remember. Until now. And she still didn't know what to do about it, but maybe the point was that at least she had one.
She didn't have the strength to not answer, once the question finally registered.
"Cleric Quiver," she said finally, her voice wavering. "He's--he's High Priest Tenebrae's closest advisor, even closer than Cleric Wreath--th- than Solomon used to be. He helped oversee the operation. But afterward he made sure Solomon would be looked-after." She swallowed hard. "Solomon--he said that next time I do an autopsy to ask what happened to the body's soul. I couldn't stop thinking about it. Somehow Cleric Quiver knew. When he sent for me, I thought--but he just sent me out to get medical supplies."
She stirred a little but didn't pull away, blinking away the tears. She was being held. She'd never been held before. Not like this. She didn't know how she was meant to respond, but at the same time she didn't want to do something that might make it stop.
"The thing is ... The thing is that the cleric in charge of supply can usually handle that. Someone only gets sent out specially if there's an emergency, and there wasn't. Cleric Quiver would have known that."
He had to have known that, which meant that he knew that she was affected by Solomon's words, which meant that he knew she was sympathetic. And he'd saved her, instead of reporting her. She wasn't sure what to think of that. No one knew what Cleric Quiver ever thought, but his saving her? No one would consider that.
"He got me door clearance. I didn't dare go back. If he knew I was sympathetic to Solomon, it was only a matter of time before someone else knew. And I didn't ... I mean, I was afraid ..."
