Skulduggery's attempt to 'quickly' pull the wig off without Gabe knowing was rather useless given the Archangel was still standing right behind him. "Well, it doesn't suit me," Gabe protested without trying to stop Skulduggery from 'trying' to remove the wig, simply because he knew it couldn't be removed. "I've already got curls."
There was really no point in putting a wig on Skul's head and expecting it to stay there until Gabe had taken other, more subtle measures.
Not that Skul cared quite as much as he was pretending. Oh, he minded, but nevertheless there was amusement in his soul and enjoyment at the attention. Desmond's reaction was just perfect; not the words, but the expression on his face, as if he couldn't imagine why Skulduggery wouldn't feel flattered that the wig suited him. It was just what Skulduggery needed to be more amused than humiliated over his appearance.
Melissa had her hand pressed over her eyes, but a moment later she lifted it, still laughing. "Wear that for a week without stopping," she said, "and I might forgive you for trying to steal my darling daughter."
"Only a week?" Rafe demanded.
Melissa tilted her head, regarding Skulduggery with pursed lips. "No, you're right. A month, I think. At least."
"If I didn't know any better I'd think you didn't appreciate my gift, Skul," Gabe said with a pout. "I think I might have to get upset. I might have to demand recompense and get upset, and then where would you be?"
