Before they had even entered the cafe, Gabe knew they'd been seen. He was also wearing a remarkably sheepish smile as they approached Skulduggery and Des's table. It was the sort of smile which looked heart-stoppingly adorable on Gabe's current face, made softer by femininity and accompanied by a dimple. By two dimples.
"Hi," he said, his tone matching his expression.
Kelly had fallen silent about the time they entered the cafe and was now staring. "This is Dillon? Your boyfriend Dillon? Your boyfriend Dillon who's a detective inspector?"
"Yes. This is Kelly. She works at the shelter." Gabe chanced a look at her face just in time to see the strengthening grin in her eyes.
"Was he, by chance, wearing that wig while giving you your massage this morning?"
Gabe blushed, lifted his chin, and smiled dazzlingly at her. "But of course."
"Is that anything like a guy who doesn't take his glasses off before sex? Because if it is, I'm going to have to object on your behalf."
"Not that I would know," Gabe pointed out primly, "but in my opinion it just makes him look more dashing."
Kelly lifted her eyebrow and looked him right in the face. "Girl, we have got to talk about your understanding of the English language if you define that as 'dashing'."
She pointed at Skulduggery, and her straight face lasted all of a second before they both broke into tension-destroying laughter. Kelly plonked herself down beside Des, eyeing him a little warily but in an otherwise friendly manner and holding out her hand. "Hi. Kelly Anderson."
"That's Des. He's a friend." Gabe took a seat more gracefully next to Skulduggery--but not too close. His sheepish smile returned as he looked at the detective. "So I may have had a bit of trouble, but I can say with absolute certainty that Davina Marr is in the shelter."
