Somehow, Gabriel wasn't expecting that. He should have been, because he knew what kind of a breach this was. That's why he'd done the best he could to minimise it in the only way he could think of. That's why he'd been as open with the truth as he could be. Some part of him had known what he was risking, but he'd ignored it.
Janet's words made him flinch and look down to the floor, his face heating. He gripped the hem of his top and then released it, wondering how Janet, human, could make him feel nearly as ashamed and unsure as he had when he'd thought he'd betrayed his Master's trust. Of course Janet wanted the best for her girls, and of course she'd accept that offer for their sake. That didn't mean she trusted him beyond that, or would.
"I'd like to keep doing that," he said softly, his voice a little strangled.
Dammit. No. He didn't want to feel like this again, all cowed and ashamed, even if he deserved it. He'd been afraid this would happen when he told the sorcerers he wouldn't be able to help them with Bliss; he shouldn't be surprised it could happen with anyone else. That was part of the risk of actually living with humanity.
With a deep breath he lifted his chin and straightened, and looked Janet in the eyes. "I would love to stay as a volunteer," he said more firmly. "Or in whatever capacity you see as fit, given--given the circumstances."
