"Cleaning lady, maybe." Gabe's mouth quirked up in a tentative smile. Janet's soul was disappointed still, yes, but it wasn't completely shutting him out. There was still a chance there, and even though the disappointment was hard to look into, Gabe would take that chance.
Kelly was still standing by the door, watching half in fascination and half not, and staring at Myron Stray just a little more than was socially polite. She'd known that he was deaf, she'd known what had happened to him, but it still gave her chills to hear what Marr had done out of his own mouth.
He was dangerous, though. Dangerous because he wasn't afraid to talk about his experience. When people who suffered a trauma talked, it spoke of quite a strong character--yes. But usually it was because they were angry. Because they were bitter. Because they wanted revenge. Well, from all accounts Marr did deserve it, but it still didn't make Kelly want to be around the man any more than she had to. 'Emotionally unstable' was a phrase that came to mind, and when men were emotionally unstable bad things happened to the women around them.
When Dillon spoke she snapped out of her stare to look at him. "Shopping," she said without thinking. "We need some things for dinner, some more things for the rest of the week. And we've got some kitchenware and linens I've been meaning to replace. We always do a big shop during the week, and I take along some of the girls who can handle going outside but might not have been out in a while. We try to avoid encouraging them to stay in unless it'd set them back in a significant way--staying in runs just as much risk of falling into a depression. Marr's due to ... volunteer."
She made a little quote-mark with her fingers with a grim smile. Out of the corner of her eye she saw that Gabby was quietly signing to Stray to keep him in the loop. She was like that--considerate. The circumstances sucked, but Kelly found she didn't really hold them against Gabby at all--was glad she'd be sticking around. She was good for the girls.
Then just what Dillon was proposing sank in and Kelly paled. "Wait. You want me to lure a traitor who tried to blow up a government office into a trap?"
"You'll be fine," Gabby said quietly, sliding her hand into Kelly's and smiling at her reassuringly. Kelly immediately felt better, but scowled anyway.
"You're cheating," she grumbled. "It's cheating to have a smile like that on a face like yours."
Gabby laughed. "I'll be there." Her smile took on an edge--a sad edge, a grim edge, a hard edge. "I lived in Israel for a long time, don't forget. If Marr tries to run, she'll find it hard to get through me."
Which actually did make Kelly feel a lot better. Right now she'd rather have someone who could take Marr down a peg than someone who could talk her down, and it was compulsory for everyone to have been in the service in Israel.
