Gabby's assurance reminded Janet that she'd wanted to ask if holding informal self-defence lessons might be a bit too much to expect in the first month of volunteer service. She made a mental note to ask later, when they had more time to discuss it and they weren't about to try something that was all kinds of dangerous.

She blew out a frustrated breath when she couldn't think of any safer alternatives. They had to try, and if Davina did end up fighting back, there wasn't a whole lot Janet could do. No one would be sad to see Davina go. And if Gabby was the one arresting her on-site, should it come to that, it might even send a positive message.

"Be careful," she warned Kelly. "You've already used up your vacation time. I'm not giving you any more if you end up hospitalised or worse."

There was something strong between Gabby and Detective Pleasant. Kelly had explained their relationship and where they met, so Janet wasn't surprised, but even so. It was obvious they suited each other. It was obvious how they felt about each other. Detective Pleasant wasn't even trying to hide a proud smile.
