Marr barked out a short laugh that made Kelly jump, trying to twist toward Janet with a sneer. "You'll bill me? You've no idea what's going on in your own world--"
The jerk as Gabby straightened her up made her dissolve into curses again. "Please walk straight," Gabby said. "I don't want to have to drag you anywhere, but I will."
"Drag me." Marr shook her head, but walked where Gabby directed her, her lips a thin line both angry and fearful. "I should have guessed who you were the moment I saw you in the mess-hall. What were the odds? But I didn't. I wasn't watching for you."
"No," Gabby said with a sigh just before they exited. "You were watching for the people who hired you, I imagine."
Kelly was going to be sick. She sat abruptly in the chair by the reception desk and put down the shopping bags she was still holding. "Can I not be a cop anymore?" she asked weakly. "I resign. Or retire. Or whatever. Janet, what are we going to tell the others?"
