"Now you're makin' me wonder how you usually do things," Gabriel said to Ghastly with a wan smile once he'd caught his breath, answering Tanith's question about the accent quite handily. He dropped it a moment later, not because it was any kind of strain, but because ... well, it just didn't seem to suit the circumstances anymore. (He kept the hat on, though.)
"There wasn't time for Fletcher to drop you off so you could dodge the Cleavers to find them," he said quite seriously to Skul. "Ghastly said that he and Tanith had been separated, and frankly, after seeing Ms Marr I'm glad we didn't wait. There's no telling what kinds of lengths she'd have gone to, just to get something out of them. Tanith was very likely in danger."
That was something else Gabe had seen when he'd asked where she was: intent. The intent, in Marr, to use Tanith against Ghastly. To hurt her, and badly, if necessary.
He also quite neatly avoided making any such promise. He'd promised Kenspeckle he'd offer help, if Kenspeckle needed it. Even if that meant getting a lecture. Still, Gabe squeezed Skul's arm. "Thank you for the support, my friend. I did need it."
