On the surface Fletcher did have an overinflated opinion of himself, and at first the boy's comment only seemed like more of that. But Gabriel knew how to listen in-between the words. Fletcher was fine with being the last Teleporter; it made him feel special.

Made him feel special because in all other areas he seemed, either in his own opinion or that of others, to be lacking. He was too young, too arrogant, too focussed on his appearance. At least as a Teleporter, he was useful.

"It's an exceptional skill," Gabriel agreed, looking down to keep the boy from feeling like he was in a spotlight, but still keeping an eye on him. "A very useful one, to everyone. I'll bet Valkyrie and the others have been appreciative."

It was a gentle probe. Gabriel got the feeling they had been less appreciative than they should have been.
