Valkyrie could hardly believe this was happening. She felt like she had to keep pinching herself, just to make sure she wasn't dreaming. She didn't, of course, because that would have looked silly. But she kept looking over when she heard Skulduggery's voice and even though she knew exactly what she would see, she kept doubletaking when the smooth white skull wasn't immediately visible. She could actually read his lips now, if she wanted.
She half expected Skulduggery to say something every time she stopped talking just to stare, maybe to tease her, but he was probably enjoying the attention. And his eyes were twinkling. That wasn't a one-time thing; it happened every time he smiled. And he smiled. And he had teeth! Well, he'd always had teeth, but now they were inside a mouth with lips, which meant now they were real teeth. And now Valkyrie could tell what he was thinking when he looked at her, which wasn't really a huge improvement because for most of the walk to her house, he was basically thinking that Valkyrie was amusing and that was it. It made her want to annoy him, just to see what would happen to his face.
If only this illusion would last forever. Valkyrie looked up at her house halfway down the block, and her smile dipped. This better not be a dream.
Meanwhile, Fletcher was having a much harder time looking at the skin on Skulduggery's head, even though he wasn't able to see the face from where he was. "I guess," he answered Gabe slowly. "I just... I got kind of used to imagining the best-case expression, you know? It's so weird actually... seeing him frown."
He hadn't even known Skulduggery for that long. A few days almost a year ago, and then a few hours today. He couldn't imagine what was going through Valkyrie's mind. What kind of a world did Fletcher live in now, that he found a man with a face weird and a living skeleton perfectly normal? What happened to just Teleporting around and taking things as he needed them?
